Research Progress in IEC Connectors

Nov 30, 2025 Leave a message

Recent research progress in the IEC connector field has been mainly reflected in multiple dimensions, including high-speed signal integrity, high-frequency interconnection, industrial and energy applications, and standardization methods, reflecting its evolution towards higher performance, more stringent environmental adaptability, and smarter security.

🚀 High-Speed Signal Integrity

In high-speed digital interconnection, IEC released IEC 60512-28-100:2024 in 2024. As the first international standard entirely based on the OSD (On-Site Development) platform, it provides a unified method for signal integrity testing of multiple series of connectors, such as IEC 60603-7 and IEC 61076-1, in the frequency range of 0.1 MHz to 2000 MHz, covering insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk, providing a benchmark for the design and verification of high-speed interfaces in servers, communication equipment, etc.

📡 High-Frequency Precision Interconnection
High-frequency precision interconnection technology continues to make breakthroughs. The IEC 61169-23:2025 standard, released in 2025, expands the frequency range of 3.5mm rigid precision coaxial connectors to 34 GHz, controls the characteristic impedance to 50 Ω ±1 Ω (high-performance grade), and optimizes voltage standing wave ratio and phase stability. Simultaneously, this standard maintains compatibility with SMA, 2.92mm, and other series connectors, supporting smooth system upgrades.

🔌 Industrial and Energy Applications
Significant progress has also been made in standardization for Industrial IoT and energy systems:

• Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE): Industry consortia have reached a consensus on the IEC 631717 hybrid SPE connector, adopting the M12 specification and supporting PoDL (Power over Data Line), suitable for IP20/IP67 protection ratings, providing a unified interface solution for industrial automation and building management.

• Energy Storage Systems: The international standard proposal "DC Connectors for Stationary Energy Storage Units," led by the China Electric Power Research Institute, has been approved. This aims to fill a standard gap in this field and provide a standardized basis for the safe operation of high-voltage, high-current energy storage systems.

🔬 Fiber Optics and Security Structures

In the field of fiber optic and structural safety, the IEC is also continuously improving:

• Fiber Optic Security Locking: The IEC TR 63323:2024 research report, published in 2024, proposes an SC adapter solution with a safety locking mechanism to prevent accidental fiber optic disconnection, suitable for home networks and critical communication nodes.

• Industrial Power Connectors: IEC 61076-8-111:2025 details a 20A rated, IP65/IP67 protected 3-pole snap-lock rectangular power connector, providing a standardized option for power transmission in harsh environments.
